Perception

By Peace | December 30, 2006

Different people can view a particular objects differently. Not all people think the same way and not all the people see things the same way as what everybody sees things. All people have different perception of things around us. That is why we all have different thinkings and we are all unique.

A person who has schizophrenia may perceive his environment at ‘not safe’, he may say that people are following him all the time. That is his own perception of his environment. This perception may not be real to other people, but is very real to him.

Optical Illusion is not hallucination. Optical means pertaining to the eyes. Illusion is something that is not real. It is only a perception. Optical Illusion means whatever the eyes can see may not be real. Hallucination is what the mind imagines.

I do not know what really is the study of psychology when I was young. I was introduced this word ‘psychology’ when I was in Secondary 1. One of the teacher, my art teacher (relief teacher) was an art student, and she studied psychology. She told us that psychology can tell about a person’s character and thinking. So that is how I have a rough idea of what psychology is.

In the same year, I have another teacher, our English teacher, who show us a transparency of a picture below, it was just a black outline picture of this below with no other colour. Our English teacher told us to look at this picture carefully and asked what we saw.

Some people said they can see a young lady, some said that they can see young lady and a old woman and some who only can see a old woman. I belong to the minority of people who only can see the old woman. I can never see the young lady. Our teacher said that people who can see the young lady are optimistic people and people who can see the old woman are pessimistic person. I thought that was partly true.

When I started working, I did not remember when, whenever I saw this picture, I was able to see both now, always can. I always can see both young lady and old woman. Probably I can ‘think’ better as I grow ‘bigger’.

Another similar concept to this picture above is the picture below. The picture below reveal a old woman and a young girl.

Is this a picture of an old woman or a young girl?

Depends on what you noticed first. If you look closely, it is a picture of both an old woman and a young girl. The nose of the old women is the profile of the girl, her eye, the girl’s ear, and her mouth is the girl’s necklace.

Optical Illusion is something that is so amusing and so interesting. Take a look at some of the pictures of optical illusion (I had found on the web) at Motivation Peek or Health Motivator. The reason why I have duplicated posts is because I have fear of ‘losing’ all my hardworks. At times when I access my blogger accounts, sometimes even when I did not edit or post anything to the blog, the template just got ‘edited’ — my site’s normal look was gone and all the information is not displayed. Then I need to go to the blog and edit the template all over again, and searching for other html directory codes etc. And for sites where I have added all my online friends, all the contacts will be gone like that too. Then I have a hard time ‘looking up’ for my online friends. That’s why sometimes I might miss out just some friends out there, not knowingly. Please let me know then.

Sensory and Perception allow people to appreciate arts. Because different people have different perception and how they feel about a piece of paintings, not all people would have the same feeling or likings for a piece of art. And for this reason, it also allows artists to paint their own unique paintings. That is why not all paintings are the same, just like handwriting.

A Disgusting Joke
A tour bus driver is driving with a bus load
of seniors down a highway
when he is tapped on his shoulder by a little old lady.
She offers him a handful of peanuts,
which he gratefully munches up.

After about 15 minutes, she taps him on his shoulder
again and she hands him another handful of peanuts.
She repeats this gesture about five more times.

When she is about to hand him another batch again
he asks the little old lady, “why don’t you eat the peanuts yourself?”
“We can’t chew them because we’ve no teeth”, she replied.

The puzzled driver asks, “Why do you buy them then?”
The old lady replied, “We just love the chocolate around them.”
