Blogs With No Comments
By Peace | July 16, 2007
Went to John Chow’s blog, and something interesting caught my attention. Should blogs allow comments? I have comments moderation enabled for all my blogs now. When I started blogging, I do not even know that I can moderate the comments. I got spams. I do not even know that they are harmful indeed. I do not care much about them. However, there was once, Blogger ‘suspend’ my account temporarily because of the spam, and I had to send emails to them. It was not really suspension of the account, but for the blogs that are being affected, I cannot post anything new. It takes about a week for them to response and I can resume writing after that. After that incidence I had comments moderation activated.
I had not moderated any comments for my wordpress account at Money Mind. It was a ‘long lost’ blog, kept in cold storage. It was not long ago that I had found the password to be able to login again. I did not activate comments moderation for this account. Not long ago, I discovered that Money Mind was suspended. It is those comments that had links in it. Links to sex porn sites. They are spam and they just keep coming in.
For people who commented, I do publish their comments if they do not have direct links in them. I will not publish links to sites which is not helpful, such as porn sites, a site that only consist of google ads and no contents, etc.
Not allowing comments on blogs means the blog is not a blog? John Chow ‘dare’ said that a blog that does not allow comments is not a blog. Well, for me, a blog is just a blog. A blog is just a NAME. I do not care what name you give it. As long as it has all the purpose of writing my ideas, conveying my thoughts to the audience, helping me earn money, it is just another website which is ‘date-arranged’, everything in chronological order.
Let me make a comparison, an analogy. Fruits are food. Whether they are apples, oranges, pears and durians, they are still food. There are many categories of food you can eat. This is analogous to the many categories of websites that you can use to create your blogs. There are Blogspot/Bloggers, WordPress, Typepad and so on. Each would mean choosing different types of food, like you want to eat fruit, fish, meat or vegetables. Within each categories of food that you choose, there are template style for you to choose — Apples, oranges, pears are templates to your blogs if you had chosen to use Fruits (eg. Bloggers). Your posts and your widgets, links to your blogs, etc are things that you do to polish your apples, oranges and pears. Depending on how you take care of them, you get what you put in. The apples that you create is your resemblance. They represent you. The page rank etc are all indication of your ‘status’ in the internet search.
People who allow comments are just like people who display their fruits, the apples on the streets. People who walk pass them comments on them. The apple is sweet, sour, bitter, spicy, horny etc etc. Whatever the people say, the apple is just an apple. Why contaminate it with saliva and dust? I do not wish to contaminate my apple. I already had an account suspended. Using my own domain of course is safer but that would not be nice either. Who wants an apple that is left on the street, with black magic in them. Why I say black magic? Spams and links that lead to poor quality sites. You do not know what will happen when visitors click on them. Some sites have ‘dangerous’ scripts in them. Once you land on it, your browser changed, your computers slowed down etc etc. I would rather have a website that is clean, with nothing hidden.
So called it whatever you want, a blog or not a blog. A website or not a website. The purpose for me here is to convey my thoughts, express my thoughts, my hobby, my business, and it is my daily rice bowl. There is no need to FOLLOW anyone blindly in this world. Each one got their own goals and their own will. Everyone got their own views and their own needs. You need to know what you are doing and as long as you know you are leading the right way, what people says or commented is not important. An apple is still an apple, even if people want to say it is an orange. It is just a name. An apple is red, juicy, sour, etc etc, say what you like. Those who have tasted apple will know what it taste like. There is no need to say more.
