Singapore Shop Houses

By Peace | August 2, 2007

Today I blog about shop houses. Shop houses are very rare in Singapore now. There are not many shop houses in Singapore. The picture above is taken from Lion City and it is what Singapore shop houses would look like.

During my young days, those shops that I went to are mostly shop houses. These shop owners have their business downstairs and their families stayed upstairs. It is so convenient.

Looking at this picture, reminds me of olden days coffee shop in Singapore. Lion City is very well done. It is not fully completed yet, but it has some slices of Singapore. Looking at this particular spot of Lion City reminds me of those days where I used to go coffee shop with my father. This kind of place normally had bad odour coming from the side of the drain.

Most shops have upper deck which serves customers as well, especially for restaurants — just like those of Holland Village.

At Lion City, the upper deck is still vacant.

The texture is very good. The walls really look old and dirty, just like olden days coffee shop. This is the place where most people will come here to eat Kaya toast, drink coffee or tea, as well as eat half-boiled eggs.

There is no air-con for people who love to drink coffee and eat the kaya bread and eggs. But nowadays we Singaporeans are much more luckier than our older generations of people, we get to enjoy modern coffee shop, the Ya Kun Kaya Toast. I definitely like this. Singapore is so hot, and it is definitely more comfortable to sit in air-con coffee shop as compared to the open air coffee shop. Open air coffee shops have lots of ‘bad air’ — cigarette smoke especially. Nowadays I do not go coffee shops anymore and I do not know whether there are still any kind of ‘bad drain smell’ at the coffee shop. But I would not like to test it out nor do I need to do that.

[...] In this world, there are people fighting against each other, framing one another, so that they can get the attention and they want fame.  Even Singapore, our nation is like that.  Such a small country, a dot on the map, but it wants to be the TOP of everything.  Everything must be world number ONE, everything must be the FIRST.  The fact is the really Top and the First nation do not need to tell people they are First and they are TOP.  So what if you are first and you are top?  How are the nation faring?  How are the people all feeling?  Our National Day is on Thursday, 9 August 2007.  This would be Singapore’s 42th birthday.  Not many HDB flats have hung up their flags.  I did not.  I put on the flag for the first time in year 1997 or 1998, when the campaign to put on the flags were just launched.  At that time, we need to buy our own flag and after that, we were told that we need to take down the flag after one month.  If not, there would be a fine.  So what is the point of hanging up flags?  We need to buy them and face a risk of paying fine if we put the flag in a wrong position or we put them up for longer periods than expected.  Anyway, Lion City had their flats decorated with Singapore flags and it was nice.  However, Lion City is doing a major revamp to their sim, and don’t know when the new ‘Singapore’ would look like. This is what ideally we should see on every block of flats in Singapore.  But each year, there were lesser and lesser flags being put up by residents of Singapore.  I do not see as many flags put up as before.  I have read a blog recently and this person had even capture a video and picture of people using the Singapore flag as tissue paper, to wipe their face.  This is very disrespectful to their own country.  Education is very important.  Singapore definitely need to improve more on that.  People should be taught the right values  and not using fines here and there to ‘control’ people.   ( I have more things to say about this, concerning money, I shall post it at Money Sick). [...] Singapore ShopHouses Though we did not get to FLY, we still had a wonderful trip to Bugis, since we got to see such beautiful shows, the Soo Kee Jewellery show and the beautiful decorations at Bugis. The most precious part was the capture of shophouses which I would put up in another post. I had not finished with that yet. After I had finished that, that would be a wonderful creation. [...]
