History of Singapore
By Peace | August 8, 2007
Today school function half day. It is National Day Celebration. Clara wore red shirts with her normal uniform skirt. Ricsson wore his PE attire. The children were so happy and excited about it. They went to school at 7am and came back at 1030am. They were so happy, waving the Singapore flag and singing the National Day Songs.
Talking about National Day, how well do you know about the History of Singapore? I am very poor in my History. I am very good at Science and Mathematics. I can be the highest in class for Science, Maths and arts. But when it comes to History, I am the lowest in Class. I have no interest in History. For me I find history very boring. Why study something which happened so long ago? Maybe it is interesting to know, but when it comes to exam, I hate to remember dates and names of people.

To know the History of Singapore, QiHua Primary School has done a very good job at it. At QiHua Primary School, this National Education Gallery Corner has what Singapore is all about many years back.

This is the traditional type of shop houses in Singapore and it is what we can see in Chinatown, where the Chinese earn a living by selling things as well as their residential place there in the shop.

Over here, you can see the type of stools that were used. In the past, women do housework and they had their children placed in this kind of stool. There is no walker for babies, the stool is the ’stationary walker’ that help the baby to sit. My mother used to put me in this stool, fed me and I could watch TV programmes and she could do her housework as well.
The rest of the stuff there, those with reds and flowery patterns are used for wedding purposes. Those are what the Chinese used for wedding. During my wedding, I also had these items.

This is a display of some Chinese artwork which I do not fancy. The one on the left show the traditional cooking style, where people need to use charcoal to cook instead of the cooking stove. I had seen my mother used that for making dumplings. Even though there are cooking stove at home, she still prefer to use charcoal. Perhaps that was what she had always done when she was young and she missed those days.
For more history of Singapore, our Lion City, I have compiled all the pictures I had taken in QiHua Primary School into the slide show. You can also take a look at people in olden days of Singapore at my previous post on QiHua Singapore Sculptures.
