MoonCake Festival

By Peace | September 28, 2007

Mooncake Festival (中秋节)

Mooncake Festival or Mid-Autumn Festival was on 25th September 2007. It was late to post about Mooncake Festival now. I was busy as usual on that night, as promised to my children. They looked forward to this day and as soon as we had finished dinner, we went downstairs. Prior to that, we had already got all the necessary stuff ready for that night. The children bought fire sparklers, those with whistle and those without sound too.

Play Fire Festival or Lantern Festival?

Every year, the Lantern Festival seem more quiet than before. I remembered when I was a child, there used to be so many lanterns and goodies such as mooncakes and pomelos selling almost in every shop. However, nowadays, lesser of these are seen, though they are not ‘extinct’.

It’s boring to carry lanterns
I had got two free paper lanterns on Mooncake Festival Day. They were free when you purchased $5 or more of Old Chang Kee food. In order to get two lanterns for the children, I purchased a total of more than $10 on that day. However, that night both the children did not want to carry any lantern at all. They were just like me while I was young. I found that it was so meaningless to carry a lantern, walking around. I rather played ‘fire’. That was what the children ‘love’ too.

Time To Play with Fire
When we reached downstairs, it was rather quiet. We went to a quiet spot. We settled down and the children started playing themselves. They really enjoyed themselves, running around with sparklers, meeting friends and playing with them too. As it got darker, we were surprised that we were surrounded by more people. Soon, the whole garden was crowded with people. There were couples, families with small children and even teens. It was a busy night at the garden.

Mid-autumn Festival or Candle Festival?
In the garden, Richard and I saw more people playing with candles, sparklers and fire than carrying lanterns. Ricsson said,”Only one quarter of the people in the garden have lanterns!” That seems so pathetic. Lantern festival but people just want to take this opportunity to get together. As for children, they seem not to be bother at all about the meaning of Mid-autumn festival or the origin of it. They just regard it as a ‘holiday’ for them, another day for them to relax, have time to do something which they can never have any chance of doing it at home — playing with candles and fire!
