Botero Sculpture
This is a bird sculpture done by by world-renowned Colombian artist Fernando Botero. It symbolizes the joy of living. The sculpture is at Singapore River. We went there at night, right after our dinner at UOB Plaza. The children were amazed to see such a huge statue, a huge bird. I took this picture with my handphone and it does not turn out well.
I love sculpture. There aren’t many sculptures in Singapore. But I had seen more over the years. For example, in the Botanic Gardens and in Schools. I cannot think of any sculptures in any of my previous schools. I hope there were, whether big or small.
Just like any pieces of art, a sculpture is the creation of the creative mind. Every piece of artistic creation has its ‘reasons’ behind it. The reason(s) would be the main idea used for the production of the art pieces. For example in the bird, the production of it is to tell people about the joy of living. The bird can fly freely. When you are like a bird, you have freedom and you can fly freely to see the world. You can eat anything you can. A happy person is a person who can eat. The bird is plump. The bird is thus seen as having ‘Fu’(prosperity) and thus happy. Having this idea, the sculpture will visualize how his bird will look like and using his imagination, and his hands, he created his masterpiece.

I had seen many bronze sculpture in Singapore. In QiHua Primary School, I had seen small bronze sculptures of the Satay Man, Samsui woman, and so on. In Riverside Secondary School, I had seen this steel sculpture during their open house. It is rather rare to see steel sculpture here. Clara said,”I want to take this picture. Very Nice!” She does not know that this thing which she said was very nice is called sculpture. At the open house, the children took all the pictures. They are the photographers.
This steel sculpture is very unique. I do not understand what they mean. I did not walk to the front to find out more. But I guess the sculpture symbolizes the motivated people, or something similar. Looking at the three small spheres and the three curves, I would think that they represent people. They looked like three people standing, bending their chest upwards. This is what enthusiastic people, the people are feel proud, confident and inspired. These are positive people, always inspired and always motivated to be at work. I suppose that is what the school mission is about too. Imagine, everyday the children walked into the school, this is the very first thing which they have to pass through. What a good place to put the sculpture. This is indeed very good, it would remind the students of their school mission and I am sure the students feel inspired too.
A great sculpture is one which will inspire people. A piece of steel has not much values and purpose to any ordinary person. A piece of steel made into spoon helped us during our dinner. A bigger project involving the talent and creative mind would make better use of steel to create sculpture which benefits more people. And this sculpture definitely has inspired me. I do not know who is the creator, but I think it is very well done. It really stands out, even Clara was inspired (though she might not know it).
