Sengkang Pai Nian

Sengkang HDB Flats

Sengkang New Town
This is Sengkang, northeastern part of Singapore. Meaning “prosperous harbour” in Chinese, Sengkang was derived from a small road called Lorong Sengkang, off Lorong Buangkok. Prior to this, the area was also known as Kangkar (Gang Jiao 港脚) or “foot of the port” as there was once a fishing port located along Sungei Serangoon. Fishing villages and rubber and pepper plantations flourished in the area in the old days.

History of Sengkang
Before the Sengkang New Town was built, vegetable and pig farms were located in the area, dominated by tropical rainforest. The only public housing estate then was the Punggol Rural Centre, comprising a few low-rise residential blocks, located along Punggol Road. These blocks at the rural centre have since been demolished in 2005, to make way for future high-rise residential apartment blocks.

Getting To Know More About Sengkang
Sengkang New Town is divided into 4 major neighbourhoods and they are Rivervale (Apartment block numbers 1xx), Compassvale (Apartment block numbers 2xx), Anchorvale (Apartment block numbers 3xx) and Fernvale (Apartment block numbers 4xx). Sengkang’s first HDB flats were completed at Rivervale in 1997 making it the “oldest” neighbourhood compared to the other three.

Shopping At Sengkang
As for shopping complexes, there are actually three of them in Sengkang. Rivervale Plaza is the first one to be opened. It has a wet market and a supermarket to cater to the residents’ grocery needs. Next is Rivervale Mall. Situated just beside Rumbia LRT station, along the Sengkang LRT loop, it is a convenient shopping place for residents living in that area. Another shopping complex is Compass Point. With four shopping levels and a basement, its size is the biggest in Sengkang. Examples of shops include Courts, Cold Storage, Kiddy Palace etc. It is a popular shopping destination for the residents as can be seen from the crowds especially during the weekends.

Sengkang Trips
Pass by Compass Point Shopping Mall, but never went in. Went there a few times when I was working — meeting up my clients and prospects for appointments and delivery of policies. During those days, I had gone to Rivervale Mall and Rivervale Plaza as well. This town is not much different from Woodlands. The nearest beach in Woodlands is Sembawang while that of Sengkang is Pungol Beach. The equivalence of Compass Point Shopping Mall is Causeway Point Shopping Mall while the rest of the shopping mall like Rivervale Mall and Rivervale Plaza resemble that of our Neighbourhood shopping mall like Woodlands North Plaza and Woodlands 888 Plaza.

Chinese New Year Sengkang House Visit
This is the place we went. Such a sight does not appeal to me at all. It is such a common sight in Singapore. Almost every new estate looks similar. Even the playground also look similar, with some variance here and there.

This is the place we were supposed to visit. Unhappiness, grievances as usual…. ugliness, but something intolerable…

This is a book I kept with me whenever I go. Any new ideas which I had, I would jot it down. Any important things I need to take note, I jot it down. Such lengthy grievances were poured to the rescue on this day of Chinese New Year, 9 Feb, Saturday, Chu San 初三 – The third day of Chinese New Year… Shall put that up on my Online Diary soon.

During this journey to Sengkang, we were amazed to see some old or dirty flats, which are so obvious and a big contrast to the rest of the flats nearby. These are the two pictures taken from the blocks of flats.

This is the closer shot of the dirty flat.
