St Joseph’s Institution
By Peace | April 20, 2008
We Are Singapore, Singaporean
I am so proud of Singapore, so proud of it. Tears of joy I shed, tears of touched and I was so moved, so moved. I love St Joseph’s Institution. I love St Joseph.

Saint Joseph’s Institution (Abbreviation: SJI) is a Catholic secondary school for male students in Singapore. It was founded in 1852 as St. John’s Institution, and is the 3rd oldest educational institution in Singapore (the first and second being Raffles Institution and St. Margaret’s Secondary School respectively) . SJI is recognised as one of the top secondary schools in Singapore, providing a value-added and all-round education to boys of all races and religions.
Pray Not Prey
It was another dream I had, so nice, so ‘homely’ that I refused to wake up. Last night, Ricsson was still having a very high fever. At 1.30am, I gave him medication. Then I asked him to pray and I prayed for him too. His fever was more than 40.6 degree celsius. His body was so hot. He reminded me of my younger days where I had fever too. My father used to touch my forehead. He was always touching my forehead to see if I had fever a not. If it is too hot, he would say,”Teng si nian, si bei suoh.” (in teochew, meaning very hot)
The Cats United
Richard helped to put ice cubes on his forehead. I sponged him. Then they slept on the bed while I slept on the floor. After some time, I heard the cats ’screaming’, the scary miaow miaow scream which I used to hear at Boon Lay. It was so loud that even at my house, the top floor I am staying, could hear so clearly. Are the cats really making love? I asked them, “can you hear the cats?” They said, “Yes, can.”
Grown Up Now
I was not afraid now. Always about 3am, I would wake up to go toilet. However tired my mother was, I still asked her to accompany me. The toilet was far from their room, and we had to walk quite a ‘long’ way to the toilet.
Sweet Dream
What a strange dream I had. It involves my father, my mother, me and perhaps my brother, big brother, cannot recall in details. There were stairs I climbed, went to second floor, came down to first floor again, and so on… in a building… My mother was young, with long black curly hair.
A Visit To St Joseph Institution
An estate I went to, beautiful but not so modern, just like the one I went to during my junior college days — the old folks home at Jalan Bahar (I cannot remember what name is it). There were bricks and painted in white and have gardens. I knew the building of one of them there was St Joseph Institution. But I cannot remember which building I went into. Then suddenly, I was with Ricsson and Clara if I am not wrong. In one corner of the ‘entrance’, they were giving out free bread, or something like that. We were given two or three loaves of small round bread (the type of bread like Delifrance sell, but shorter version), and two long stick ones (something like butterstick or cheesestick type sell in Four-Leaves).
Metal Gate Over Old Gate
Prior to that, my father and I was discussing about our door grill or metal gate at the door of our house, must be the Boon Lay house. It was a metal bronze door being installed. But my father later said that the door belong to the dead or something like that. I did not like the gate too, so ugly. But I was later awoken by my children….
Message From My Dream
The first thing I did, as soon as I am available to use the computer, was to search for St Joseph Institution. Before that, I found in my ‘catholic box’, Solemnity of St Joseph (5.5.85), 139th year Anniversary, complementary copy. That was when I was 14 years old, when I went to the church that year.
The yearning spirits
Last month, on the day I discovered the death of the guy at Blk 209 Boon Lay Place, 9th floor, I called my sister. On that day, we planned to go St Joseph Church again. We had not gone there for such a long time.
The Flag on Father Terrence Clothes
This is the flag I was looking for. I search for World’s flag, but could not find this flag. But now I know this is the flag, which is the school logo for St. Joseph’s Institution, 圣约瑟书院 (Shèng Yuè Sè Shū Yuàn),
Institusi Saint Joseph
The school motto - “Ora et Labora”, Latin for “Pray and Work” is a reflection of the twin pillars of the La Salle Brothers, Faith and Zeal.
It’s The Father Leading The Lamb, The lamb of God!
