A Very Sweet Day
By Peace | May 21, 2008
Photographs of the divine butterfly: After I had taken its photograph, it flew away.
Sight To Soul’s Content
Today I feel very contented. I was posting about Buddhism and Vesak Day celebration today. In the afternoon, when I was bringing Clara to school(I still have no time to write about the school), we saw a brown butterfly (quite big) waiting for us just outside the lift where we came out (Lift A). It was a brown butterfly, the type of ‘dead people butterfly‘ or divine butterfly. This is the first time I see such a colour butterfly and such a pattern also.
Then on the way back from school, yellow butterfly approach me, two times on both side of the road. In the evening, Fu Shan Garden was full of birds’ songs. On the tree, I could see three black-naped oriole, all singing.
Eat To Heart’s Content
In the evening, my brother gave me some fruits(mangoes, honeydew and mangosteen). I got to eat mangosteen and sugarcane today! Clara went to farm-mart today and she got back 2 pieces of sugarcane. I had not eaten sugarcane for centuries.
Sugarcane, My Grandfather
My grandfather used to deliver sugarcane. He drove a green pick-up and would deliver sugarcane to my aunt and uncle. My aunt, who is also my baptism godmother, sell sugar-cane drinks — her stall at Jurong East. During those days at Boon Lay, my sister always cut the sugar-cane for the family whenever my fourth uncle(used to deliver fruits) or my grandfather gave us sugarcane.
I think after we moved out of Boon Lay house, I did not get to eat sugarcane anymore. Just now, when I tried to cut it myself, it was so hard. Then Clara asked Richard to help.
It was such a long time since I last eat mangosteen too. Ricsson was so happy when he saw the mangosteen. He was so eager to eat them.

Best Mangosteen, Rare mangosteen
This photo shows the type of mangosteen which is very nice to eat. But this is not the one, but look very alike. The best one which I had were eaten at Taiwan, during the tour with my mother. The flesh of the mangosteen looks translucent like the one in this picture above and it is crunchy and ’seedless’ (zu ji = seedless, in teochew). This type of ‘zu ji’ and translucent looking mangosteen is very rare and very nice.
However, this batch of mangosteen which my brother gave today is very sweet and juicy too. It is very lucky that most of the mangosteen are mostly edible, not spoil.
