Total Defence
By Peace | June 27, 2008
This is an exhibition on Total Defence. There are five types of defence — Military Defence, Civil Defence, Social Defence, Economic and Psychological Defence. Whatever happens to one person, affect another person, especially in the family itself.
In this exhibition, there are twenty panels, twenty lamps, each illuminating the big piece of poster with words and photograph. However, out of this twenty panels of posters, one lamp was not working, and it was this second one, the one with a pencil, and it was also this one which struck me most. I stood there, reading and tears filled my eyes. Yesterday, I wanted to write about it, again, I was filled with lots of touch, very sad…
It wrote: It was Saturday 6.30am. The national servicemen on duty were brought by their commanding(CO) to the Cenotaph at the Esplanade. The CO asked them what they knew of the Cenotaph.
“It’s in memory of the Singaporean Soldiers who gave their lives during World War I and II,” said one of the men.
“Yes, the Cenotaph signifies sacrifice,” the CO said. “I want you to remember why you are all sacrificing weekends with your family. Look around you. The City Hall represents our Independence. The CBD and Marina area stands for our nation’s economic growth. More than 60 years ago, Japanese tanks drove through this very ground you are standing on. It is your duty to defend this country and never let it fall again. I want you to think about this and write your reflections on your ammunition cards.”
The men took out their cards. They thought. They wrote. One of them had tears in his eyes.
“I wrote about my mother,” he told his CO, “She has a lot of hope for a better future. Every time I use my card, I’ll remember how important my work is.”
Military Defence is About:
Deterring Aggression
The Singapore Armed Forces is built to deter aggression and to secure a swift victory over aggressors should deterrence fail.
Operationally Ready
National Service is the only viable option to ensure Singapore’s security. Our National Servicemen(NSmen) and full-time NSMen(NSFs) have to stay combat-fit. They must ensure that weapon systems are in good working order at all times. And they have to keep up with technology to meet new challenges in the battlefield.
Meet All Kinds of Challenges
The SAF works with other security agencies to protect key buildings and places as well as to handle non-conventional threats such as terrorist bombings and hijackings.
