Information about Yusof Ishak Secondary School
Yusof Ishak Secondary School (Abbreviation: YISS), A Leading and Learning Insitution is a government secondary school located in Bukit Batok, Singapore.
The school was named after Yusof Ishak who was the first president of Singapore. The six values of YISS are Resilience, Responsibility, Respect, Compassion, Confidence, and Integrity and the school motto is ‘ILMU SULUH HIDUP’ ( Knowledge is the Light of Life).
Yusof Ishak Secondary School was established in 1965 at Jubilee Road (a side road of a section of Pasir Panjang Road which is now known as West Coast Road) as Jubilee Integrated Secondary School with Jubilee Primary School as its affiliate. It was an integrated school offering secondary education to an enrolment of 984 pupils and 37 teachers of two streams, in English and Malay. At that time, it was envisioned that the school would be serving the needs of the families residing around Pasir Panjang Road area as there were several malay kampungs dotted all along it. On 29 July 1966, then Prime Minister, Mr Lee Kuan Yew declared open Yusof Ishak Secondary School (YISS) at Jubilee Road.
This was the school which I often saw sitting in my family’s car, either my big brother driving or my father; but usually was my big brother. I did not even know that who is Yusof Ishak, but it was an ‘old school’, with ‘dirty’ walls, the back view I saw on the expressway.
I love to sit in front of my elder brother’s car. I love to put on the seat belt. I love to follow him then. I used to bring along a story book to read in the car. My brother bought me bible stories and two other story books — Thumbelina and Cinderella. They are my favourite books.
This is our Singapore Money, President Series(Protrait Notes); this is one of the pieces of my collection, a precious one piece of one thousand dollar note.
I love to collect notes from all over the world. This is my only piece of S$1000 note which I had to give up already, otherwise if moths and termites come to eat it up, it would be gone.
I only discovered the back of it to be the Government only on National Day, 9 August 2008… WOW… I was reluctant to part with it….
Singapore President Series $1000 Note : I love this building so much, it is so nice, our Parliament House……
