Boon Lay Secondary School
Leon Lai song, 是愛是縁 with photos of Boon Lay Secondary School.
Full of excitement when I thought of going back to my school, my ‘mother school’, 母校. I can still remember very clearly, the one who asked me this question. She asked me,”Why the school is called ‘mother school’ 母校 and not ‘father school’?”. She was my primary school, supposedly best friend or ‘my best friend’ (later I know that when I regard someone as my best friend, the other person may not regard me as their best friend)…
I am so grateful, SO full of gratitude to my Master, Jesus. Jesus opened up my mind and my eyes to see and know the truth of creation and the origin of life.

I searched the web and was so surprised to see the school being relocated. I thought of going back to my school in May, but have no time.
Boon Lay Secondary School was established in 1977 with 13 classes. It then had two main mediums of instruction: English and Chinese. It was officially opened by Mr Ngeow Pack Hua, MP for Boon Lay on 2nd August 1979. In 1988, it became a solely English-medium, double-session school. Over the years, the pupil population has grown from 13 classes in 1977 to 1231 students in 36 classes. In November 1999, the school relocated to its current premises, well-equipped with special rooms and IT-enabled classrooms.
The School Crest containing the letters BLSS, symbolises the luxuriant growth of a tree, thus conveying the meaning of an “ever-growing” institution.
Philosophy: Every pupil has the potential to learn, to achieve and to excel. The school will nurture this potential and provide all opportunities for his total development.
Vision: Every Boonlayian an individual of wisdom, purpose and compassion.
Mission: To provide a caring and orderly school environment which promotes moral, academic, physical, social and aesthetic excellence.
Core Values: Responsibility, Integrity, Perseverance, Respect, Compassion, Discipline
Desired Outcomes of Boonlayians:
- Wisdom – Make informed and responsible decisions. Apply skills and knowledge; Be a life-long learner.
- Purpose – Set life targets, Be forward looking, Be optimistic
- Compassion – Feel love in whatever we do; Touch lives; Develop empathy.
I never know that the school has a creed… This is the School creed:
We, Boon Layians, Strive to be Outstanding in every way. Putting Others first, we will love and forgive. We will Nourish our minds with knowledge and Learn to make responsible decisions. We will Aim for excellence in all that we do, so as to become Youth of wisdom, purpose and compassion.
For more than 13 years, I had not seen the school. For about 20 years, I had not stepped into the school. On Friday, it was a great day…… I learned so many things…

Thank you 谢谢你师姐, I was in BLSS from 1986-1990. Come over to Facebook and you can find a few BLSS Alumni groups… do you remember the SBS bus svc 246, 244, 240, 206 and 199 from Taman Jurong Bus Interchange? All of a sudden, the smell of the cocoa/chocolate factory nearby, the thoughts and memories of the old kampong behind the school and some of my friends from the kampong area of Choa Chu Kang/Lim Chu Kang come flooding back. It’s been such a long long time…
