Jurong West Secondary School
By Peace | August 23, 2008
On this day, 22 August 2008, I made a trip to my school, Boon Lay Secondary School. I took a train from Causeway Point, and reached Boon Lay MRT station. After alighting from Boon Lay MRT station, I walked to Boon Lay Secondary School (don’t know the exact location, but based on ‘memory’ — ‘aga-aga’ (estimate). I walked and walked and saw a school. I turned left and it was this school, Jurong West Secondary School which I came to…. There was no through road, and this was the only school there.
This school crest or badge is so interesting. It really ‘captivate’ me.
The eagle represents strength of character with outspread wings looking west, guarding the virtues of the school embodied within the school crest. The contoured shape and design of the crest is reminiscent of the badges of the guardians of the civilian society signifying discipline. Above its head and outspread wings, the initials of the school take position and precedence.
The school’s virtues are symbolized by the four designs in the two halves of the crest. Two clasped hands form the shape of a heart symbolizing the school’s aspiration to create individuals who will serve the needs of the community. The atomic symbol represents the need to be technologically oriented as mankind explores the realms of the digital age and cyberspace.
An unconventional square bulb symbolizes imaginative thinking to help nurture creative minds. A flaming torch representing life-long learning is placed over a scroll signifying academic excellence, the former taking precedence over the latter. And finally, displayed at the base of the crest, is the school motto reinforcing the courage of the eagle.

I was about to leave, but saw this on the wall of the school…
I told the security guard that I wanted to take a photo of this wall, and he allowed. He was very friendly, though he was concerned about why I was taking photo.
On the wall shows the core values of the school: Integrity, Teamwork, Resilience, Innovation and Creativity, Excellence and Loyalty
School Vision: A vibrant community that produces all-round citizens.
Students and staff are reminded of their Core Values everytime they enter the school… the standard of Singapore’s School has improved so much as compared to last time…
Next, I saw the school vision, the ‘waterfall’ and the school values…. I told the guard, I would just stay there, no further in.
However….
Wow, this school is so nice. I cannot help but walked a little further in. The security guard still standing there, watching me, but did not ask me to leave — So thankful to him, an Indian man.
Can hear the water dripping sound, the koi swimming in the water… what a lovely place for the staff and students.
School Mission: The school seeks to nurture the moral, cognitive, physical, social and aesthetic development of the pupils.
This eagle sculpture just beside the ‘water pond’. So nice.
Behind me, or opposite this beautiful ‘water pond’ is the general office, with all the awards as shown below:
Sustained Achievement Award and Roll of Honour….. WOW, looked so impressive. I thought of walking further to see the details of ‘roll of honour’, but that ‘was bad’ (I stayed too long in the school compound).
School Song
1. Dreams can be broken
But hope is over the rainbow
With our strength of character and majestic flight
We’ll hold the dreams with our claws
We’ll shine, oh what a sight!
Oh yes, we will fly to the sky,
Chorus:
Perched proudly as we see our destiny,
We’ll be where dreams turn to reality,
Yes, we will soar, touch the sky, move the earth
We’ll make a diff-er-ence, where eagles dare!
2. Challenges come but we dare
To overcome them all
With our powerful wings and eagle eyes
We’ll meet the challenges with our claws without a sight
Oh yes, we will fly to the sky.
I love their website. At this page where they showed their school song, there are photos of the students holding the flag. This is showing pride for our nation, the flag, the symbol of our nation…
Looking at the History of the school, I was impressed by their facilities such as cyber cafe and amphitheatre facilities. Jurong West Secondary School functioned at the old Boon Lay Secondary premises along Jalan Boon Lay from January 2nd 2001 until it moved to its new present premises at 6, Jurong West St 65 on 18th March 2002.
Wow, I am amazed at the Teachers’ Creed too!
