Assumption English School: Labor Omnia Vincit

Labor omnia vincit is a common Latin phrase, meaning “Hardwork conquers all“.
Translated literally, Labor omnia vincit means “Work (Labor) conquers (vincit) everything (omnia).” It is taken from a Latin poem written by the Roman poet Virgil about 29 B.C., during the time of Augustus Caesar (the successor of Julius Caesar). The poem was the first of a series of four, called the “Georgics”, which were written as propaganda for Augustus’s “Back to the Land” campaign designed to encourage Romans to take up farming. (The word “Georgic” is Greek in origin, and means “A book about work on the land.” “Land-worker” or “Farmer”.)

Assumption English School was founded in 1953 by Brother Vincent, a Gabrielite Brother as one of the three components of Boys’ Town. It was then known as Boys’ Town English School.

History of The School
In 1955, Assumption English School was established as a single session, full school with classes from Primary One to Secondary Four, the School presented its first batch of students for the School Certificate Examination. In 1973, the Secondary section of CHIJ Bukit Timah merged with Boys’ Town English School and the school became a Co-educational Catholic mission School.

The School took on the name of Assumption English School in honour of our Lady, Mother Mary, the Patroness of the Brothers of St Gabriel. The school progressed rapidly and in 1989, the school authorities decided to upgrade the facilities to better meet the demands of education for the new millennium.

In December 1992, the Primary Section of the school closed and the students were absorbed by St. Anthony’s Primary School. Building of the new school building started in 1993. The $20 million new school building was officially opened on 16 August 1997 by the then President of Singapore, the late Ong Teng Cheong.

On this day, Saturday, 20th September 2008 at about 12.45pm, the door bell rang. We were very surprised who could be ringing the bell. The children opened the door and we were told that some students were at the door, asking for donation. Next, Clara came to say, “Thomas is outside!” I was so surprised! “Thomas?? REALLY???” I quickly went out and took a look…

Wow, it was really Thomas! He is so tall now, as tall as me now! I donated 50 cents only and got a sticker. It was the Blue Ribbon Project from Boys’ Town and he and his friends were asked to come Woodlands. I am so happy to see Thomas.

On 13th September 2008, at the time when I arrived at St Anthony church, I was asked to donate also. That time, I gave the children a total of 30 cents, the same sticker — The Blue Ribbon Project from Boys’ Town.

My Family: One Heart, one mind, one mission
Someone once said, “why our family got two ‘Theresa’ and also two ‘Mary’?” Our family also have Eddy and Thomas…. and now it is growing…. having more members now as more of them got married and soon more babies to come.

Shaping Our Future
Just this song to describe my feeling: 輪流傳
