D13 Durian

By Peace | April 17, 2009

Lately on the grassland beside Causeway Point, there are Pasar Malam again. Durian season is here again. I saw this Pasar Malam selling packed durian and Woodlands North Plaza selling durian too. I had waited so long for these durian. Last year, I asked the market seller, and the guy told me the durian season is over. He said,”Need to wait until next year July then have durian already!” That is definitely going to be so long! How trustworthy is his words? But looks like he is wrong now.

I don’t know the names of all the durian, but buy them based on their look or texture, since nowadays all the durians are mostly packed (and is more convenient for consumers). If there is a choice, and provided got people to help me open the durian, I would want to buy the whole durian rather than packed durian. But count myself lucky enough already if I can afford to buy durian! Otherwise my children and I would not even have a taste of durian AT ALL!

On this day, I passed by the fruit store at the Pasar Malam as usual. Not everytime I passed by I would buy them. It all depends on what I see at that particular time, and depends on what the seller offers me. So on this day, the seller happens to tell me that he would give me offer. And I happened to see a few packets of ‘good’ durians that I like. So I decided to give it a try (after the long wait). It was D13 Durian… Never heard of D13 before, but only heard of D24. But the seller told me the durian was good. And they were not cheap. Every packet costs more than S$10. I could not remember the exact price now. But I bought 3 packets altogether as he gave me discount for the three packets, which amounts to about S$40-45.

These are the three packets of D13 durian that I had bought at the Pasar Malam:

This is the first packet that the children had opened and eaten up before I had a chance to take photo of it. My children love durian too.

If I am not wrong, this packet of durian is the best. It leaves a very shiok aftertaste — the taste of liquor just linger in your mouth. The texture of the durian is just nice for me, the perfect amount of water content and ‘flesh’, terrific… it’s worth the amount of money I paid for.

This packet of durian is not so much of ‘liquor’ taste, but still it is bitter, and not the sweet type. I love durian that is more bitter than sweet. Some durian do not leave any aftertaste. But this durian is still consider good, not too sweet, and is bitter enough.

A few days ago, I asked the Mao Shan Wang Durian Seller at Woodlands North Plaza,”Which is better, D24 or D13?” He told me D13 is the best. I am surprised… But anyway, out of the 3 packets of D13 that I had bought at the Pasar Malam, indeed they were good, especially the one with strong liquor aftertaste. It is simply marvellous.
