Laptop or Desktop

My first laptop (a unpopular brand which I had forgotten) cost about S$1600 in the 1990s. The desktop would have cost more expensive then (@ about $3k), which my parents had bought for my brother in the 80s. Over the decades, I had seen how computers evolved and nowadays we can see computers and notebooks sale readily.

It is a competitive market. Many shops are selling computers and it can be confusing for some people who do not know what they want — do they want to buy a desktop or laptop? There are several factors to consider when deciding which to buy. You can read about Laptop Computer Buying Guide and Desktop Computers – the Pros and Cons at ShopWiki. They provide a comprehensive descriptions on these topics. For example, they show you top picks, types of laptops available, getting the best laptops, features to consider and other topics like Bluetooth Compatibility, Battery Life, Warranty and so on. You can also consider Refurbished Computers!

Over the years, my family has used so many laptops. They are various brands like Acer, HP, Dell, IBM, Toshiba, Fujitsu and Asus. Every notebooks have a short ‘lifespan’. The shortest one should be Dell and the longest one so far is my Fujitsu. My Toshiba laptop used to cost about $3999, but it lasted for last than 3 years (perhaps about 2 years…) Our family has 2 Dells notebooks (Inspirion). They lasted not more than 2 years.

Each of the family members used to have a notebook each. However, when the notebooks are ‘dead’, we could not afford to buy anymore computers for the kids (all my savings are depleted, used for Isaac.) Now, my children do not have computers for themselves. They have to share with me. I am thinking of buying a desktop for them to use.

Considering the durability/lifespan of the notebooks, I have no intention to buy notebooks for my children. It is like throwing money into the drain after two years. So far, the most durable computer that the home ever had was Acer desktop, which lasted for at least 5 years. That is the reason why I intend to buy desktop for the children (since the children are using the computers for homework and games only.) The children do not need to bring the computer out for work or bring it to the school.

Photograph showing Asus Customer Service Officer checking ASUS Eee PC 1008HA.

Richard works at home. He is a heavy internet user. His Asus Eee PC 1008HA was purchased in June 2009 (not even a year yet). Last month we went shopping for laptop again. He read computer reviews on the internet and finally he decided to buy Acer laptop at Harvey Norman. Acer Aspire Timeline 1810TZ is slightly bigger than Asus Eee PC 1008HA (netbook), but both are equally small. Eee PC is lighter. But I like neither of them. I still prefer my existing notebook, Fujitsu. For my present usage, netbooks are too small for me — typing is very slow. In addition, both models do not have CD/DVD drive.

Once he had purchased his Acer laptop, he began to configure it and this week, we were able to go down to Asus service centre to have his Asus Eee PC repair (which is yesterday)… The customer service officer said the repair work will take about 3-5 days. He said we would be called first before we go down to collect the notebook….
