Chinese New Year 2010

Welcoming The God of Fortune
Reunion Dinner
The Chinese New Year is celebrated for 15 days, from 初一 (chu yi = 15 February 2010) to 初十五(chu shi wu = 28 February 2010) according to the Chinese Calendar. This Chinese New Year, as usual, Richard and I brought the children to her mother’s house (my mother-in-law) for reunion dinner. This is the first time Isaac is having reunion dinner (at 8 months old). I did not enjoy the dinner because 90% of the time I had to look after Isaac and this is really no fun at a ‘foreign’ home where there is no high chair, cramp areas and a lot of troublesome things with little kids around. I was not really full then.
I miss my childhood reunion dinner with my parents, brothers and sister. We had sumptuous meal and more fun. However, I am still appreciative of my mother-in-law’s effort. She has to prepare everything alone and she has to celebrate Chinese New Year alone.
So it’s best to be a child — you can have mother to look after you and care for you. Normally after Reunion Dinner, parents would give the children Hong Bao (red packets) with good wishes and the family members would sit down to have a chit chat, watch television programmes and even gamble. That is what my family did when I was a kid. My brothers and I would play blackjack and other poker games. While playing games or cards, we watched TV programmes and ate Chinese New Year goodies. Sometimes my sister and parents would join in as well.
Nowadays, nobody gamble anymore… At my mother-in-law’s house, it is even more quiet. The children would go playground after Reunion Dinner. The children make all the difference in the house.
Chinese New Year Homes Visitation
There isn’t much place to visit this year. And I really hate to travel around, carrying so many things around with Isaac to look after. Being the youngest in the family, my house is always so cold. The only times I invited people to my home is those days when I had no children yet. The last time I invited people to my house was after Ricsson’s birth…
My home… a ‘pig sty’, and I would not have to cheek to ask people to come to my house. Furthermore, who am I? Who am I to ‘qualify’ for the ‘elders’ to visit the ‘young’ (as what my sister always regards). Being the youngest in the family, you have no say…

Special Outing Day, River HongBao 2010
River HongBao is always at Marina Bay. This year, River HongBao 2010 is perhaps my fourth time visit. Not all the years I went. It is the first time Isaac went there also — but at that time, he was sleeping (so he did not really ‘visit’ or see it).
Sun, Wind, Cloud
We went there in the day. The main purpose is to bring Richard’s computer for repair. It was a day of ‘one moment rain and one moment shines’. We were already determined to go out, and had all changed. When it rained, we had our lunch at home instead. After lunch, it was all fine weather again.
After rain, the birds began to bask in the great sunshine. What is Good and what is bad when things are sometimes blessings in disguise… and it takes boiling water to brew a good cup of tea.
It was really a great day for me, despite all the initial rain and sunshine… You would not know if you are able to go out on this day, but ultimately, everything turns out just so well! This is all the credit of my Lord, Jesus Christ.
Zodia Animals, Zodiac Sign or Fortune-telling
For people who have not gone to River Hongbao, this video shows you photographs taken from there. It contains the twelve zodiac animals with fortune telling/readings on wealth, career and relationship — sponsored by geomancer/Feng Shui master Yun Long Zi.
God of Fortune
“The God of fortune is an auspicious god, which many Chinese worship during Chinese New Year. The pictures of the god of fortune are hung in every household, hoping that fortune and good luck will shower upon them. The god of fortune lantern is composed of unceasing wealth, seaweed from the Lotus Sea and gold ingots to bless the people of Singapore with good luck in the Year of the Tiger.” These are short notes written below the god of fortune(as seen in the photograph above) at River Hongbao. It is sponsored by Loyang Tua Pek Kong.
Christ Be Our Light
I have coupled the photographs taken on this day at River HongBao with the song Christ Be Our Light, because I have to thanked Jesus for my ‘self-renewal’ and for giving me everything that I have now. This beautiful day, I have to thank Jesus.
