Clean and Green Singapore?

By Peace | April 22, 2010

Photograph of this site taken at 18 April 2010, 4pm: Prevent mosquitoes breeding banner

The above shows a banner that says,” Let’s do our part to check and remove all stagnant water in our homes,” at the bottom of the banner. On the left hand side of the banner, it says,”It Pay$ Not to Breed. Fine $200 for Mosquito Breeding.”

19 April 2010, My Paper: Big jump in Dengue cases in Woodlands

The above news read:
Overturning pails to prevent mosquito breeding is no longer enough. National Environment Agency (NEA) officers and volunteers from the Woodlands Community Club’s environment committee want Woodlands residents to wipe pails dry too.

They will drill six to eight holes in the rims of all pails in 13000 homes in Woodlands in the next three months.

They are targeting pail rims because the number of mosquito-breeding sites found in pail rims has grown from four in 2007 to 47 last year in the North West District.

Other unusual breeding places, include the base of pails, the rim of dish trays and even the hollow of frying pans…..

No doubt we must do our part at our homes to prevent the growth of mosquitoes, afterall, the main ‘culprit’ still come from our environment. You have to take care of the ‘BIG’ and major areas before you can tackle the small areas of concern.

How the mosquitoes GET INTO our home in the first place?

There must be some mosquitoes out there, BREEDING OUT THERE, ROAMING AROUND FIRST, before there are mosquitoes that can fly into our homes to LAY EGGS.

Yes, this is mosquitoes flying DOWN from the HDB flats:
How many people are staying in HDB Flats in Singapore? Do you know what is on the rooftop of your flat?

Photograph of the carpark taken on 19 April 2010, showing the carpark rooftop filled with stagnant water.

Unaware To You
Staying at high floor, last floor of the flat, I could see the carpark rooftop. If everyday you are walking at the carpark, you would not know of this ‘DEADLY’ pool of water above you. This pool of water is going to breed how many millions of mosquitoes!

Who are going to be affected?
Residents staying near the carpark would be affected most. Students of QiHua Primary School is going to be potential mosquitoes ‘blood sucking’ targets as well. How dangerous this can be if nobody do anything about it and NOBODY SEE this deadly pool of water!

NEA Environmental Officers?
How many carparks in Woodlands are of this design? I was walking home from church and I saw all the multi-storeys carparks that I passed by are of this pattern — with 2 open rooftop space as shown above. Are there anyone who come to check these sites EVER?

Sembawang Town Council
Richard read all these news, saw the exhibition booths and all the banners that is spreading the message about breeding mosquitoes. He finally said he wanted to call Sembawang Town Council again on Monday, 19 April 2010. We do not know what time Sembawang Town Council started work. So he called at 9am.

WHO are you speaking To?
This pool of water has been here for so many days and this is the second time he needs to explain the whole situation to ‘whoever answer him on the other side of the phone’. He always never ask for WHO he is talking to and never bother to find out more details…
