Security Guards

Security Guard Post: The ‘Little Home’ or office of the Security Officer/Security Guard

Security Guards play very important roles in our society. Regardless of what premises you are talking about, the job of the security guards is to ensure safety of the place. You can see security guards at shopping centres, condominiums, schools and even factories and other important buildings(such as the Istana).

The job of a security guards are of utmost importance. They are not to be overlooked. They are not policemen or policewomen. But the job of the security guards can surpass that of the policemen!!

Very often, we seek the help of the policemen only when ‘THINGS HAPPEN’ or when things HAD HAPPENED. Policemen will take down your REPORTS and then INVESTIGATE the matter. However, that of the SECURITY GUARDs are different. Security Guards PREVENT ‘THINGS’ from happening. The purpose of having security guards in certain premises is to ensure people in the area can have PEACE.

What is PEACE? Peace is knowing that you would be safe in the place where you are staying. It can be you are working in the school. Do you feel safe teaching in the school, teachers of QiHua Primary School? It can also refers to residents staying in Condominiums. They have security guards to ‘protect’ them. In doing so, they know that no unauthorized personnel can enter their premises. They can have peace of mind, knowing that they have good neighbours, they have no strangers loitering in the neighbourhood to do any harm to their children.

What happens to a place that have no security guards? Lots of things can happen when there are no ‘watchful eyes’ around. At places where there are CCTV (surveillance camera) around such as the bank, robbery can still take place. That’s why, even though the bank has CCTV, we can still see security guards (Policemen) around.

In previous years, we see that the job of security officers are not highly sought after. Those who took up such jobs are mostly the ‘singh’, the elderly Indians (who might not speak good English) or do not have much education/qualification. Nowadays, we see women security officers or security guards also. There are more younger security guards and they wore uniforms. Way to go! I think that the security guards have improved over the years, but there are not to be complacent. They need to have more training and knowledge…. in order to protect (those whom they are ‘entrusted’).

In the school, the security guards of course look after the school. Their job is so much important. The safety of the WHOLE SCHOOL depends on the SECURITY GUARDS!!! What a big headache they have if things are going to happen, and the poor security guards have to ANSWER them!!!

Lets take a look at the school with no security guards around:

Slideshow of Schoolgate (B) with no security guard around

These photographs were taken on Friday Morning when I happened to walk past the school. It was obviously the peak period where parents sent the children to school and parents need to go to work… very messy indeed…

Look at what the security guard in the school was doing:

This is definitely not a smart way of handling things. The security guard was deployed to control the traffic…

What time the security guard starts work? This is another important aspects. The security guards must be the FIRST to start work and the LAST to leave the school if he/she is really RESPONSIBLE for the PROTECTION of the WHOLE SCHOOL. Every students, every teachers, every cleaners, and any other workers or staff in the school is under HIS PROTECTION! This is the JOB of the security officers or security guards.

In some factories or most factories, security guards work 24 hours round the clock. They even stay in the factories. The factories are their home! In Singapore, our school security guards do not even need to work 24 hours, but yet we can still see ‘sleeping’ security guard

Just how responsible and how committed to their job are the security guards of Singapore?

Yes a security Guard is very important to keep schools and premises safe. However many of our Security are elderly (do a survey to confirm this statistics). They have to work 12 hours shift. It may must be crazy to expect them to be really really well alert.

The working hours should be 8 hours in accordance with the Labour Law and not 12 hours though in order to camouflage the 4 hours it is considered overtime!!
