My Expectation of The School
As a parent, I want to know what my children are doing in school. I want to know how my child is progressing in the school. I do not need to know probe my nose into his daily affairs, but at least, I would like to know some details as to what exactly he is doing in his school…. after all, the school is my child’s second home! Every morning, he wakes up, and the next thing he does is to go to school. Nowadays, the school children are as busy as adults. By the time they reach home from school, it is always so late! You would not have any chance to have lunch with them either. Out of the five days (Monday to Friday), my son got three days where his classes end at around 2pm. Every week, he needs to attend CCA practice twice a week also. CCA practice starts at 2.30pm and ends between 4.30 to 6.30pm. During the days where he had CCA, he would reach home between 5 to 7pm.
I give birth to my son, just like I had given birth to Isaac. It was not easy, from conception to birth. Not only had I spent huge sum of money right from the start of conception until birth, I had also spent huge amount of time and energy in looking after him all these years. Time has passed by so fast — I was carrying him, rocking him to sleep, feeding him porridge and so on… just like what I did to Isaac now… But now, my little Ricsson has grown up. He had left Primary School and he is going through another stage of his new life in the new school…
During the beginning of the year, we were invited to the school’s CCA open house. I got a chance to see how the school run their activities…
Half a semester gone. Throughout the school terms, I had received less than three phone calls from teachers… to be exact, I had received two phone calls from the school teachers (Home Economics teacher, telling me that Ricsson did not complete his homework). The next time I received phone calls from the teachers were recently… last Wednesday…
I am very unhappy with the Concert Band teacher(s) — the one who talked to me. I would explain why later. On the same day, two teachers called me — one was the form teacher and the other was the Concert Band teacher-in-charge. I will explain the matter in details later. But the issue to be tackled is really this: Communication between the school and the parents, in particular the teachers and parents.
Despite having students handbook, I still do not see how the teachers have effectively make use of the book to convey message to parents. Despite all the modern technology like internet, we parents are not informed of anything special about our children…. Parents, like me, are not informed of students’ progress or any developments AT ALL.
My child has various SUBJECTS in school — English, Mother Tongue, History, Geography, Literature, Home Economics, Art, Music, Mathematics, Science, Health Education and Physical Education. But can you imagine, NONE of these SUBJECT TEACHERS have any PROBLEMS with my child…. And yet, suddenly ONE DAY, I received phone call to say that my child’s performance was not satisfactory…
