Expo'70 Postcards

Expo'70 Postcards

Unriddle
Yesterday was another special day, a day of great discovery… The above postcards were my childhood collections… Yesterday, I happened to see it as I was getting Birthday Cards. Though it had been with me for so long, I does not seem to ‘read’ what I had. For the first time, my eyes was really opened on this fateful day, 19.9.2010… and the church celebrated 25th Ordinary Sunday mass…

Awareness
On this stack of postcard was written the word “Happy Birthday!” and this stack of card was from Japan World Exposition, Osaka. Inside this stack of postcards, I saw some old postcards which I had long forgotten. Among them are postcards of Mother Mary (Our Lady Shrine, Church of St Mary of the Angels)!!! There are two other ‘mysterious postcards‘ also….  At the cover page of the postcard folder was written “Expo’ 70: Progress and Harmony For Mankind”  – with small print: Japan World Exposition 1970, Shinseido…

Celebrations
On this day, it was two birthday celebrations which was going on… one was Clara’s friend and the other was Richard’s grandmother’s.  Last year, 2009, we went to grandmother’s house also.  Her birthday celebration seems to be a yearly affair, without fail (except the years where Richard and I were separated, otherwise we would attend).  What filial children she has… my mother does not have such luck.

SengKang
As soon as we finished with church (catechism), we came home and got ourselves ready for the birthdays.  This year, Clara did not go with us, since she went to her friend’s birthday.  Richard, Ricsson, Isaac and me took a cab to Sengkang

Upon alighting from our taxi (Prime Taxi), I saw standing opposite the road were the ‘fourth uncle’ family... the wife, husband, son, maid and two children (one girl and one boy).  Memories of them appeared in my mind — my first impression of them in the beginning… and now…  it was so different.  They had aged a lot.  The once youthful woman, looked so different now… at that moment, I got ‘special sensation’ over me…

Grandmother
I had ‘known’ the grandmother for so many years, but seen her for so few times, and really know her so little. It is during Birthday celebrations and Chinese New Year that I got to see her. The other time that I went to see her was at the hospital when she was admitted some years back. All my great grandparents and grandparents were dead. I think this is the oldest ‘grandmother’ that I had left and seen, and ‘know’.

Grandmother's Family

Grandmother's Family

Hokkien Family
This is such a big family. Ah Mah (grandmother) has 9 children — 5 boys and 4 girls… Of these years that I know her, I did not know her actual date of birth. I am always so curious to know “WHO” I see and “WHO” I am talking to etc etc… but this is something very funny… The person whom I had married to, did not know his own grandmother!!! And that is the reason why I don’t know so many things… and I had to ‘slowly learn’ about them all these years. Now that I had ‘learned’ much about them, it’s been ‘ages’…

Numbers
This seems to be such a ‘united family’ and a big family with 9 children.  Though I do not know all the people in the photograph, and still figuring out, I can roughly tell from the face… but still slowly…  Can you imagine, the person who is suppose to be closer to this family, my husband, don’t know anything about the grandmother and the grandfather…
