Shop Space
By Peace | April 20, 2011
One shop closed, another one opened. What is the reason behind all these? In the first photograph, you see The Paw Shop and its neighbour shop with a red banner. The shop used to be a salon which I used to go to cut my hair. But on my last trip to the shop, the shop owner, did not even inform me of its closure. I got to know it only after I walked past the shop last year… Both shops used to belong to the same owner. But now, only the Paw Shop remains…
It was a lecture theatre. The people present seemed to be the insurance people… Prudential (Pathfinder)… Going in at first, I had booked 2 seats. But later, I was left with no seats… In no time, every seats were taken up. Someone on the other side offer me 2 seats — not the theatre seats but some additional chairs that were being added (brought to the lecture theatre). Isaac was with me all the while, and that is why I took 2 seats.
Next, I was climbing down stairs, very steep stairs like that of the ladder. All the steps were like cupboard boxes, one after another stacking just vertically on top of the other, all floating in the air, and I had to go down each step. On my hands were two little boxes. Walking down the stairs and carrying Isaac seemed so impossible. I tried for a few steps and was so frightened of the height.
Now this part of the dream: It was Boon Lay Drive, my old house. Thomas and his bunch of people were walking away. I was walking in the opposite direction of them. Next, I told them that I was going to buy cake. I went to Blk 173. I don’t know if this block of shophouses still exist now. However, in the dream, it was the last shop of this block of shophouses. Inside this shop, it was the “Peter’s Family”. I saw Peter’s mother (with a thick black mole on her face) tending the shop. It was a grocery shop. The shop is not renovated at all and it was rather empty, with a few cupboards around.
In the past, Peter’s Family used to occupy the second and third shopspaces of this block of shophouses. The first and last were other people. The fourth shopspace which I had dreamed of was always changing people (changed shop owners). The first shopspace was a grocery shop at first, but later it became a small eating house. The second and third shopspaces were owned by Peter’s Family. Before I moved to Woodlands, I discovered they had another shop at Woodlands. Their shop was at Blk 818, beside the clinic. But now it was some language school.
Inside this dream, this fourth shopspace, a chinese salesgirl was told to serve me. She was the only sales assistant and she was tall and fair. At first, I was all alone in the shop (no one serve me). I looked at the cupboard on the right of the shop, which was covered with a piece of cloth. I opened the cloth, unveiling the cupboard and I saw all the wedding gifts (dowry items) displayed on whole shelves. That was not what I was looking for nor wanted to buy. I continued searching. This time I turned to my back to the opposite side of the wall. There was another cupboard. This time, the shop owner was JULIANA, the one who had always used to cut my hair (but no longer so). She told the sales assistant to help me. I said I wanted to buy a small butter cake.
Before I entered the shop, there was several cakes of various shapes and sizes displayed outside the shop. They were put in big glass container covered with a red cover. One of them was not covered at all. I was not sure if the cakes were nice a not. They looked like “egg cakes” (sponge cakes) and not butter cakes. So I entered the shop, intending to buy what I wanted — butter cake. I looked at the uppermost shelves of the cupboard as mentioned above. There were cakes displayed. I told the salesgirl to show me the cakes, but each time she gave me not what I wanted. The first cake that she shown me was a cream cake with beautiful decoration of a woman’s sculpture, flowers and chinese poem written on it. It was a beautiful cake, but not what I wanted to buy. I looked at the cake in appreciation of its beauty, looking at the Chinese Woman Sculpture dressed in Chinese traditional costume. I looked at the Chinese Poem, but was not able to read it. I told the salesgirl and returned the cake to her. Next, I looked at the cakes displayed on the left hand side of the shelf. There were a few cakes stacked on top of each other. They were just plain cakes but with different filling/stuffing inside. I asked the salesgirl what was the different filling/stuffing inside the cakes, but she did not answer me. Again, she always gave me not what I wanted. In the end, I told the owner (Juliana), but this time, I saw some changes to the cakes. They were like ‘bitten off’ or sliced off at the side, so revealing the inner part of the cakes. I could see now the first cake on the top was a brown marble cake. The second on the bottom was a special cake of bread with raisins. Both the cakes looked delicious, but I wanted to buy butter cake. The size was like 2 kg. It was rather big. On the right was smaller ones, like 1 kg. They did not show me…
