Gambling Evolution
By Peace | May 20, 2011
3 years back I saw many pigeons perching on these rain trees as I went back to my home town at Boon Lay. Last Monday, I did not get to see any pigeons flying or perching on these rain trees. Instead, I sensed some ‘eeriness‘ as I looked up on these old trees…
Imagine how old is this estate here. It is as old as me, and even much older! These trees are really ‘ancient trees’ that existed even before I was born!
Some of the things have changed while the overall structures (buildings and roads/pavements) are still present. This is a common walkway that is being used by so many pedestrians and residents, connecting them to amenities like the shopping centre, cinema, market, temple, school and church. It is a place that I often ‘patronized’. One remarkable incident which happened here while I was walking with my second brother was that time when I knocked myself against the lamp post. It was such a silly incident and I was being ridiculed naturally.
Those were my precious childhood, time spent with my brother, my dear brother, who had never failed to inspire me. He is my playmate and ‘teacher’, teaching me many things. Through him, I had learned gambling as well as several other games and sports.
On last Monday, my ‘pilgrimage tour’ to Boon Lay again, first time this year, and first time since Isaac came to this earth. It was Isaac’s first time to Boon Lay as well. I saw these group of people playing the olden days Chinese Traditional Card Games, which is called “Four-Coloured” Cards or 四色牌.
Even though my mother is illiterate, she knows how to play these card games. She can play the Mahjong very well too. Who says that the casino is bad? What is good and bad? I think that it is all about how people make use of whatever ‘tools’ that is given to them. As long as you know the rules of the games, you can play the game. If you use money, you are gambling. That is how words are being used…
With the advancement of technology, gambling had come online as well. Since ancient(medieval) times, people had already know how to gamble. It is the ‘hobbies’ and even the traits of the people to gamble. Even if you do not have a casino, people can still think of other ways and make use of other objects to gamble. Take for instance, the betting of soccer balls. Other aspects of gambling involves the betting of election results as well (SG Election 2011 on 7 May 2011). This means that you do not need to go Casino in order to gamble! There are various new forms of gambling online! In present day situations, every business is a gamble. You can have a shop, with all your inventories and so on. Whatever advertisements and investments you had put in for your business is considered a gamble — you are risking part of your money in return for a bigger sum of money (profits).
Many people are blaming the government for building the casinos. People are always blaming people for things that they do. They have rules and laws to restrict whatever you do. People feel unhappy here and there. But in the end, things are just things. Things are non-living and have no brains. We are living things and we have brains. We ought to know when to do the right things and what to do with our lives. People would not be particularly happy if the Casinos were not been built. People will always try their own ways of gambling (a short cut to earn money) even if they are not allowed to enter the Casino. Also, you do not need to be playing Blackjack or Slots to be considered gambling…
I have known a ‘gambler’ for 21 years! 21 is the number of ‘independence’. At 21 years old, people celebrate their independence…
Life itself is a gamble. Today I have chosen to take this shortcut to reach Point A. Is it going to be safe? Is it worth my time to take a risk like that or is it a better choice to walk a long way? Marriage is also a gamble. Every decision and every choice that we made is a gamble. “Tikam Tikam” (drawing lots)… I surrender… Tired. Fight no more. Flow with the water…
I would take whatever cards that come next…
