Lockers

By Peace | March 16, 2012

One can see lockers around when we went to certain places like shopping centers, libraries, schools, offices, clinics and hospitals. To name a few, in Singapore, we used to find lockers at Ikea (at Queenstown) second level. Shoppers locked their bulky belongings in the locker and enjoyed carefree shopping at Ikea. Those were doubled tiered standard lockers. Now they no longer provide them. At Woodlands Civic Centre, small lockers were provided outside the library as well. Some time ago, they have the lockers doors changed from non see-through doors to doors that can allow people to see what the contents of the lockers were. All the locker doors contained a rectangular piece of transparent plastic ‘window’. Not all the lockers were utilized. These lockers were not steel lockers but made of wood. Why the sudden change of locker doors? This is for security reason. You do not know what people locked inside the lockers. For a sum of money, say $2, to be deposited into the locker, one may misused the usage of the lockers — the implantation of hazardous equipments or substances that may endanger the lives of the rest of the people in the vicinity. For similar reasons as Ikea, and the area outside the library at Civic Centre, all the lockers in this places were now removed.

Lockers are still used in working places such as some companies and hospitals. In companies where the staff need to change into their clean room suits, they need to lock their belongings in their lockers. Richard used to have his own office locker too.  He used to work at Tech, and always need to changed into his clean room suits. The same thing happens for hospitals. During my working years at Mount Elizabeth Hospital, nurses and visitors need to changed into operating theatre suites or clothing. All our belongings and clothings would then be placed in our own designated lockers. At first, I had to shared locker with my colleague; it was only after sometime then I got my own locker and locker key. When you need to go for X-ray, you would need the use of a locker as you would need to change into their gown.

Having a locker is very good. In school, you can place some textbooks in the locker and it saves you the trouble of bringing the items everyday to school. I used to share locker with my JC (Junior College) friend. It was a double tiered standard locker at the back of the school. That was the only time I had possession of my own locker. Nowadays, primary schools and secondary schools also have lockers. Teachers and students can use the lockers.

Other lockers that we encountered in life is those that are being placed at swimming pools, gym or spas. Athletic lockers placed in swimming complexes or inside Gents and Females is for similar purposes as mentioned above. Basically, the usage of lockers are very straightforward — for storage of personal belongings. MoreLockers.com has so many photographs of many types of lockers. Some old places have worn out lockers with rusty doors and ‘legs’. They should consider replacing them with new ones — now lockers come in many forms, even designer and specialty lockers! Morelockers.com specialized in lockers and they even sell kids lockers and lockers accessories. It is a place you should visit if you are sourcing for lockers.
