My Life is a gift, a gift from God, the creator of heaven and earth. Every life on earth is precious. Each of us are born into this world for a mission or task to accomplish.
Last Saturday, 24th May 2008, the day the church celebrate Corpus Christi, the Body of Christ…I was so touched in the morning, before I went to church… Many of us always feel the other side of the hill is always greener, and many people fail to look into themselves what they have, or even fail to believe in themselves what they have, and thus lacking self-confidence.
Many times, we also fail to read what is given to us. Just like in the case of QiHua Primary School. I attended their open house in the year 2003. I was given newsletter/periodicals called “Voice of Qihua — Gift To the Nation”, but I never really ‘read’ or ‘see’ even though I saw what I saw at that time — just a magazine. But it is all different this time that I read these books, of various volumes.
This is especially so for the School Crest. The school crest, the school motto and the school’s vision and philosophy is what always interest me. It tells people about the school. It is the first impression any stranger or foreigner can have about the school.
My kindergarten was Church of St Francis of Assisi and it was a one year course. My first school is Yung An Primary School. The school crest was the shape of a fish, blue in colour, but I had not known what was the meaning of it before. Searching for Yung An Primary School on the internet, it was no longer in existence. Once, Yung An Primary School, Merlimau Primary School and Yuan Ching Secondary School was side-by-side, but now, Yung An Primary, Merlimau Primary and Jurong Town Primary School had merged to form the new Lakeside Primary School now — started on 1 January 2003. It was later officially opened on 23 July 2004 by Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Minister for Education.
School is my lifeblood, I love school.
School is the place where children can gain wisdom, learn from young, it is a place where children get their education. Knowledge is the gateway to wisdom. The school is the place where the children of tomorrow are molded. The best time to teach a child is when they are young, and when is the best time to teach a child? I taught my child as soon as they are visible in front of my eyes.
Each of these schools was given a crest and a motto, of the ideals and values for which the institution stood. As what Richmond College had mentioned about the school:
Schools fulfill a vital responsibility in handing over a nations cultural heritage from generation to generation. It is the school that provides a child with his first real experience of the world outside his home and it is in the school environment that the growing child learns most of his initial lessons of nature.
Education is the essence of life. The sailing ship represents Education and the waves of the sea signify life. The ship of Education is moving forward in the sea of life. The three masts of the ship signify knowledge, attitudes and skills. The 3 stars that light the path of the ship of Education are the Holy Triple Gem the Buddha, Dhamma and Sangha. The Latin words NISI DOMINUS FRUSTRA mean that no amount of human effort will bring success without the blessings of God. This is a universal truth. In most conventional religions based on the belief that God is the creator of all things, success is dependent on God’s will. The crest of Richmond College is a wonderful creation of art, full of meaning in the religious, philosophical, educational and social contexts.
The motto of Richmond College has a long history, dating back to over a century. “NISI DOMINUS FRUSTRA”(All is in vain without the Lord) had been I as the College motto in 1887. .However according to records found in the National Archives and the National Museum-”PALMA VIRTUTI” (Virtue takes the prize) was chosen as the first College motto, and it is found in the College magazine from 1891- 1899.
My father always said that the next generation of people are getting harder and harder. He always said,”What you learn in school?” “Your teacher never teach you?” My sister always said,”You are a degree holder!!!!!” “Degree holder don’t know Chinese?” 大学生(Da Xue Sheng) don’t know this and don’t know that…. blah blah blah… she will say. It is really true that I did not learn everything in school! Who can understand my plight? We are all born into different family background. If your parents can speak good English and good mandarin, chances are you can speak well. If your parents are successful in business, successful in work and life, chances are the children can get better life. But, I want to tell you what real education is.
